When John Carter was transported to the world of Barsoom (known to us Earthlings as the planet Mars), he thought he had left behind his travelling companion -- James Powell. He was wrong! James Powell was also transported to the red planet, where he embarked upon a series of adventures as strange and wondrous as those of Carter.
This edition compiles the first four tales of intrigue and discovery during Powell's lifetime among the Martians. The first chronicles Powell's arrival and subsequent enslavement to the Red Martian overlords, and his eventual fight for freedom. The second story involves a lowly thief who is thrust into the role of leader when Powell's freedom forces threaten a slave-state. The third story relates the fall and rise of Barsoom's most beautiful and malevolent femme fatale. The fourth and last tale in this edition tells the story of Powell's battle against a despotic cult leader and the secret the villain hides about the red planet.

These are pastiches of the John Carter of Mars series by Edgar Rice Burroughs. I've gotta say, that while NPB Barker's ERB-style in his pastiche is better, all four of the novels/novelettes included in this e-volume are well-written, well-imagined, and great fun. They are worth the few bucks to once again travel to the Mars that ERB envisioned in his Mars' series. AND, the 2nd novel in the book - Joh Na: The Shadow-Lord of Mars - despite the editing flaws, is absolutely brilliant. My only complaints, let's see now, there are two minor ones: 1) The women are even more scantily attired than Burroughs or even Barker envisioned. They are even less-clothed than today's comics picture them, which, I do not believe ERB would have liked all that much, and, 2) How the word "lied" can be used instead of "lay," I just do not get it. But, as it only happens 3 or 4 times, it's no big thing. Unfortunately, though, it took my mind off the story so that I had to actually re-read several pages on the first 2 occurrences. After that I just plain got used to it.
Lastly, the Kindle covers and the book titles imply darker plots and more evil doings than are actually contained in the books. The books are actually wondrous in the same way that ERB's are. I loved all four stories. If you have read the Burroughs' Mars series, give this one a try. I hope there are more on the way.

Death of Barsoom Omnibus Volume 1 eBook Edwin Burrouf Bob Giordano Reviews
A generally very good job of evoking/continuing Burroughs' Mars worldscape. The idea of focusing on Powell, John Carter's briefly-mentioned companion in Arizona before JC's teleportation to Mars, is a good one, and it offers an alternative view of Burroughs' inventions. There are some minor inconsistencies (Burroughs/Carter never uses the term "king" that permeates this volume but instead employs "jed" - a copyright issue? doubtful) - but the chief shortcoming may be an intended one the story is not complete. The book hangs fire on a wide variety of plot points that suggest that a sequel has been intended from the first - this is, after all, "Volume 1," and that's good news.
I understand this to be a work finished some years ago but un-edited and un-published until recently. It is sad that the editing that was eventually done was done so poorly. Misused words and typos abound as well as improper punctuation. In all, no better than one would expect from a self editing self publisher. If you enjoy the John Carter stories you will enjoy this creative and well written twist in the Carter story. However, it remains a shame that such precise and personable prose suffers from such indifferent editing.
